Winged Wonders Of Hauz Khas Village
Few capitals in the world, least of all one which has a dubious pollution record and 15 million residents to boot are blessed with such rich and diverse bird-life as Delhi is, coming as it does close to the most birded capital in the world, Nairobi.According to noted birder Bikram Grewal, Delhi's Feb 2008 count has been 202 varieties.
As an amateur birder i am fascinated by the bird life in this part of Delhi.
I have pinched from the internet the 24-hour Bird Count in Delhi Region done by Peter Jackson which is quite apt for Hauz Khas Village and its environs.
Have knocked of some birds that i do not recognize of his list. As things stand today the Griffon Vulture I am desperate to see anywhere in North India. I was pretty happy to see with my fellow Hauz Khas wallah and photographer a pair on the Manali/Leh drive a couple of weeks ago.
Hard to believe that in our younger days we were used to seeing thousands all over the countryside and that things would come to this state!
Most of what Mr Jackson saw in 1970 in a day is visible in and around Hauz Khas around the year.
For the last 4 days i have been watching with interest (or concern!) a pack of House Crows pestering a pair of Pariah Kites neat their nest on a tree next to my house. The kites finally gave up the fight and the kites made merry with whatever they found. Survival of the fiercest in this case !!!!.
The ridge between JNU and Secor B Vasant Kunj was where we used to see a pair of the Great Indian horned owls. Thats gone for good i guess. What a pity! Hopefully the upcoming Aravali Biodiversity Park between Nelson Mandela Marg and Vasant Vihar will enrich Delhi's bird life.
Happy to see though that some house sparrows are back in Hauz Khas. Have watched them progessively dissappearing in Vasant Kunj over the years and being replaced by noisy pigeons.
We need to pay more attention to our surroundings.
